ESEA Hub and Build Breakwater Forest Walk

I had a dreamy time illustrating for ESEA HUB and Build Breakwater. As an East Asian who grew up around here and experienced racism and other forms of bigotry, it was very meaningful to me to walk in Epping Forest with a group of East and Southeast Asians! I was commissioned to create an image responding to the experience.

On the walk, I drew trees and plants and took many photos. I remember thinking the colourful coats of the people and the trail we made seemed like the tail of a colourful dragon dancing through the forest.

I wrote some words too.

At some point during the walk, I felt like it might be interesting to try and draw the people on the walk. Participants included Ghost and John who you can see floating at the top of my illustration (and who created ESEA Hub’s website).

The following is a description in their words:

“It was a beautiful walk in Epping Forest with the Breakwater @build.breakwater of @young.sook.choi & @taey.iohe on a winter weekend. We chatted about possibilities to collaborate, holding spaces for each other and the challenges we are facing ahead. As in this illustration by @themolluscdimension, we’ve all had a great time walking on the crispy yellow leaves.”

ESEA Hub commissions a range of workshops, focus groups and conversations, led by leaders in the ESEA communities to unfold questions about our responses to the COVID-related racial violence. Learn more about our work [here].
